Lincove vs Boll & Branch: Who Prints the Numbers?
The short answer: Boll and Branch makes lovely sheets, and its Down Chamber Pillow is a respectable pillow. But when I went looking for the numbers that tell you how good a down pillow is, Boll and Branch’s page did not have them. No fill power. No fill weight. No thread count. It does not say whether the down is goose or duck. Lincove’s Signature publishes every one of those: 800 fill power, Hutterite Canadian goose down, 15 to 32 ounces depending on size, a 500 thread count shell, and a five-year warranty. The Signature is the better pillow on paper, and it is the only one of the two you can actually check.
I host a lot of people, and I have learned to buy bedding the way I buy a roast: I want to know what it is, where it came from and how much of it I am getting.

Fill power, in writing
Fill power is the grade of the down. It is how much space one ounce fills, and only big, mature clusters reach the high numbers. Lincove prints 800 on the Signature and on its comforter. Boll and Branch does not print a fill power on its pillow or its duvet.
That does not mean the down is poor. It means I cannot tell, and at $159 a pillow I would like to be able to tell.
A Queen, finally
Boll and Branch sells Standard and King. So does nearly everyone. Lincove also makes a Queen, which is the size that actually fits the pillowcases on a Queen bed without a saggy end.
It is a small thing until you make four beds in an afternoon, which I do rather often.
What you are really paying for
With the Signature you are paying for more down of a higher grade, and you can see both numbers. In Lincove’s survey of 13,425 American sleepers, 48.2% wake up with neck or shoulder tension, and 59.2% had tried three or more pillows in three years. Buying once matters.
Across its five-year warranty the Signature works out to 24 to 33 cents a night. And if the softness is wrong, Lincove swaps it for free within 60 days.
My take
This is a paper comparison, and that is rather the point — I have not slept on the Boll and Branch. One of these pillows can be judged on paper and the other cannot, because the numbers are not there. I like Boll and Branch. I would like them more if they printed the fill power. Until then, my money for down goes to the brand that shows its work.
Where Boll and Branch wins
Price, by a wide margin. It also fills its pillows in the USA and uses an organic cotton shell, which will matter to some of you — and at $159 it is a far more sensible thing to put on a bed the grandchildren will jump on. For that job my guest room pillow list has cheaper options still.
FAQ: Lincove vs Boll and Branch
Is a three-chamber pillow better than a single-chamber one?
It is a different way of building support. Boll and Branch’s Medium and Firm use a feather-and-down inner pillow wrapped in down; Lincove gets its firmness by adding more goose down. Both work. The chamber approach means some of what you are paying for is feather rather than down.
Does “U.S. down” tell me the quality?
No more than “Canadian down” does. Geography tells you where the birds were, not how big the clusters are. Fill power is the number that answers that question, and it is the one that is missing here.
Why does a Queen size matter so much to you?
Because a Standard pillow in a Queen pillowcase sags at the end and looks slept-in the moment you make the bed. If you are making up a spare room for visitors, it is the difference between tidy and nearly tidy.
Which would you give as a gift?
Neither, at these prices, unless you know the person’s sleeping position — pillows are a very personal thing to guess at. There are safer things on my gifts for new grandparents list.
