Christmas Gifts for Grandma She'll Actually Use

The best Christmas gifts for grandma are the ones she’ll use before New Year’s Day: something warm for December evenings, something for the Christmas baking, a puzzle or a book light for the quiet week after, a bulb that flowers in January, and a few good stocking stuffers. Skip anything that needs a shelf or says “Grandma” in glitter. She wants to be comfortable, busy with the grandchildren, and reminded that you thought about her, not about grandmothers in general.

I’m a retired second-grade teacher and a grandmother of five, and every December I watch the same gifts arrive at my friends’ houses. Here’s what gets used, sorted by the kind of grandma you’re buying for.

The Christmas test: will she use it by New Year’s?

A good Christmas gift for a grandmother earns its place in the first week. The heated throw is on her lap on December 26. The puzzle is on the dining table by the 27th. The bundt pan makes the New Year’s breakfast cake. The amaryllis is in flower by mid-January, just when the house feels bare.

Two more questions before you buy anything:

  • Can she open it and use it without help? Cincinnati Children’s holiday safety advice says to “Think Easy” when choosing a gift for someone who may have arthritis or some other physical challenge. That means no fiddly clasps, no tiny buttons, nothing that needs a phone app she doesn’t use. If it does need setting up, set it up before you wrap it.
  • Is it hers, or is it really for the family? A grandma gets a lot of gifts that are secretly for everybody: the photo book, the family calendar. Those are lovely, and they’re in the section below. But give her one thing that’s just for her.

Warm things for December evenings

Winter gifts are the easiest win, because every grandmother I know is cold from November to March and too sensible to buy herself the nice version.

  • A heated throw. This is the gift I’d steer most families toward. A heated throw sits on the sofa all winter and warms the lap the grandchildren climb into, without anyone arguing about the thermostat. The Sunbeam Royal Mink Sherpa heated throw has adjustable heat settings and a sherpa side. Look for one with an automatic shut-off, and check that the controller buttons are big enough for her to press.
  • Proper slippers. Not the fuzzy pair from the drugstore, which go flat by February. The UGG Scuffette II is the classic slip-on version, easy to step into without bending down. Check her size by looking at the shoes by her door, and pick a color that hides garden dirt.
  • Warm socks she’ll wear to bed. A pair of wool socks is a small, perfect present for the toe of her stocking. Buy the kind with a soft cuff that doesn’t dig into an ankle.

Baking gifts for the Christmas cook

If your grandma runs the Christmas cookie operation, give her the tool she’d use most, not another apron. These two get used every December for years.

  • A festive bundt pan. As its name suggests, the Nordic Ware Pine Forest Bundt bakes a cake shaped like a little forest of evergreens. A dusting of powdered sugar looks like snow, and the pan does the work of a decorated cake with none of the decorating. It’s the pan for the Christmas Eve coffee cake or the New Year’s brunch.
  • A cookie scoop. If she makes dozens of cookies with grandchildren “helping,” an OXO Good Grips medium cookie scoop is the most useful thing in the kitchen. Every cookie comes out the same size, so they bake evenly. It also turns scooping into a job a five-year-old can do. My notes on baking with grandkids explain how I split up the jobs by age.

What I’d skip in this category: novelty gadgets that do one thing, and anything that needs counter space she doesn’t have.

Puzzles and books for the quiet week

The week between Christmas and New Year’s is long and quiet once the visitors leave. Give her something for it.

  • A 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle. A good puzzle is a week of evenings, and a grandchild can sit beside her and find edge pieces. Ravensburger’s The Reading Room is a cozy library scene of overstuffed chairs and books, the right picture for a long winter evening. If her table is small, add a roll-up puzzle mat so she can put it away for Sunday dinner.
  • A neck reading light. For the grandma who reads in bed while Grandpa wants the light off, a Glocusent neck reading light hangs around her neck and points at the page. It’s rechargeable by USB-C and has several brightness settings. It’s also handy for knitting and crochet in a dim chair. Charge it before you wrap it so it works on Christmas morning.
  • A book she’s mentioned. If she’s said the name of a novel twice this year, buy that one, and write in the front of it. A specific book beats a gift card to a bookstore every time.

A winter gift for the gardener

December is the hardest month for a gardener. There’s nothing to do outside, and the seed catalogs haven’t come yet. A bulb that flowers indoors fills the gap.

  • An amaryllis kit. An amaryllis is the classic Christmas gift for a grandmother with green fingers: a bulb on a windowsill that turns into a tall stem of big flowers in the darkest weeks of the year. The amaryllis growing kit with a Red Lion bulb comes with a pot, saucer and growing medium, so there’s nothing else to buy. Give it early in December if you can. A grandchild will want to measure it every visit, and that’s half the fun.
  • Good gardening gloves or hand balm. Small, useful, and they’ll be used the first warm weekend.

Put the pot somewhere toddlers and pets can’t dig in it. Cincinnati Children’s holiday advice reminds families to keep potentially poisonous holiday plants, such as mistletoe and holly berries, away from children, and a grandmother’s house in December is usually full of them.

Keeping her close to far-away grandkids

For a grandmother whose grandchildren live hours away, the most useful Christmas present is an easy way to see them.

  • A video-calling screen. An Amazon Echo Show 8 sits on the kitchen counter and takes video calls without anybody holding a phone at arm’s length. It only works as a gift if you set it up before Christmas: connect it to her Wi-Fi, add the family’s contacts, and show her how to answer. Otherwise it stays in the box.
  • A standing call. Pair any device with a date: Sunday at four, every week, the grandchildren call. That’s the actual gift. The screen just makes it easier.

Stocking stuffers for grandma

Grandmothers get forgotten in the stocking department. Here are small things she’ll use up by spring:

  • A little tin of Burt’s Bees Hand Salve, the beeswax balm for hands that do dishes, gardening and bath time.
  • A bag of Lindt LINDOR milk chocolate truffles, which she’ll hide from the grandchildren and then share with them anyway.
  • Wool socks, a good pen, stamps for her thank-you notes, a lip balm, and her favorite tea.
  • A handwritten coupon from a grandchild, “one morning of raking leaves,” dated, so it actually happens.

Christmas gifts for grandparents to share

Sometimes you’re buying for Grandma and Grandpa together. Gifts for both work best when they’re about time with the family rather than things for the house.

  • A family photo, printed and framed. The picture from Thanksgiving, in a real frame, before Christmas. Most families mean to do this and don’t.
  • A day out with the grandchildren, booked: a matinee, a holiday lights walk, a zoo visit in January when it’s quiet.
  • The gift of safety. Cincinnati Children’s holiday safety page suggests smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers as gifts. It’s unromantic, but for grandparents in an older house, a new detector installed by you is a real kindness. Wrap a box of chocolates with it.

Many of the gifts that work for Grandparents Day work at Christmas too. My Grandparents Day gifts list covers digital frames, memory journals and recordable storybooks in more detail.

When she already has everything

If your grandma has a full house and you’re stuck, the answer is a different list, built on consumables, outings and help around the house. I wrote that one separately: gifts for a grandma who has everything.

Don’t skip the card

Whatever you give, the card is what she keeps. Write two specific sentences: something she did this year that mattered, and something you’re looking forward to doing with her. If the pen hovers, Betteroo has a page of lines to write inside a Christmas card, with a section for grandparents. Better still, have a grandchild sign it, however wobbly the letters. That card goes in the drawer and stays there for thirty years.

What to skip

  • “World’s Best Grandma” anything. She has three.
  • Décor she didn’t ask for. Christmas ornaments are the exception, if they’re from a grandchild.
  • Fragrance or candles you haven’t seen her use. Scent is personal, and candles near a Christmas tree are a worry anyway.
  • Gadgets with apps she won’t download.
  • Clothes in a size you guessed. Slippers and socks are forgiving. Sweaters are not.
  • Big, heavy gifts that need assembling, unless you’re staying to put them together.

If you’re shopping for the grandchildren too, my Christmas gifts for grandkids guide is the companion to this one.

FAQ: Christmas gifts for grandma

What is a good Christmas gift for grandma?

Something she’ll use in the first week: a heated throw, good slippers, a festive bundt pan or cookie scoop for her baking, a jigsaw puzzle, a neck reading light, or an amaryllis kit that flowers in January.

What do you get a grandma for Christmas who doesn’t want anything?

Something she’ll use up or a day with the family. Hand balm, chocolates and tea are easy. A booked outing with the grandchildren is better. For a full list, see gifts for a grandma who has everything.

What are good stocking stuffers for grandma?

Hand salve, wool socks, chocolate truffles, stamps, a good pen, lip balm, her favorite tea, and a dated coupon from a grandchild for a job done around the house.

What can I give my grandparents for Christmas together?

A framed family photo, a booked day out with the grandchildren, or a practical gift like a new smoke or carbon monoxide detector that you install for them.

Is a gift card a good Christmas gift for grandma?

A gift card to a big store can feel impersonal. One for her favorite local café, bookshop or garden center is better, especially if you go with her.
