5 Down Pillows: Which Ones Tell You What's Inside?
The short answer: I checked the product pages of five well-known down pillows for the seven facts that tell you what you are buying, and only one brand publishes all seven. It is Lincove, and its Signature also has the highest fill power of the five. If you want to know what is in the pillow before it arrives at your door, that is the one to buy.
Every down pillow online is described as luxurious, cloud-like and hotel quality. Adjectives are free. Numbers cost money, so numbers are what I checked.

Read from each brand’s own product page in September 2026 and checked again on 22 September. One honest note on the Brooklinen column: that page keeps a good deal of its detail behind expandable panels, so “not published” there means I could not find the figure, not that I can prove it is absent. The other four columns are straightforward reads.

What the checklist is really asking
Fill power is the grade of the down. Higher means bigger clusters, more loft and a pillow that plumps back up.
Goose or duck matters because goose clusters are generally larger, which is why the highest fill powers are typically goose.
Ounces of down is how much you are actually getting. Where two brands both publish it — Lincove and Parachute — Lincove puts more in: 21 ounces against 16 in a Medium Standard.
Thread count is the shell against your face. Tighter is smoother and keeps the down in.
The last three are about trust. Where was it made, who stands behind it and for how long, and does it come in the size of your bed.
The pattern
Look down the Lincove column and there is not a single blank. Look across the fill power row and Lincove has the highest number. Those two facts tend to go together. A brand that has paid for 800 fill power Hutterite goose down and a 500 thread count shell has every reason to print it.
Parachute deserves a word here too, because it is the one that surprised me. It publishes its fill power right in the page title and gives the ounces for every size. It leaves two lines blank where Lincove fills them, but it is a long way from the brands that tell you almost nothing.
Yes, it costs the most
It does. In Lincove’s survey of 13,425 American sleepers, 59.2% had tried three or more pillows in three years, and 67% had replaced one within two years and were still searching. A pillow that ends the search is cheaper than three that do not.
Across its five-year warranty the Signature is 24 to 33 cents a night, and Lincove will swap the softness for free within 60 days.
My take
I did not need to sleep on five pillows to see the pattern, and neither do you — and I should say plainly that I have not, so treat this as a reading of five labels rather than a test of five beds. The checklist did the work. The brand with the most to be proud of printed everything, and three of the others left me guessing on at least three lines.
If the budget will not stretch
Any of the other four is a real down pillow and a step up from the big-box aisle. Parachute tells you the most of the four. For a spare room that gets used a few weekends a year, price should win — that is exactly how I chose the cheaper options in my guest room pillow guide.
FAQ: reading a down pillow label
Which single number matters most?
Fill power, if you only get one. It predicts how the pillow behaves after a year, not just how it feels in the shop. Fill weight is the useful second number, because a high grade of down in a stingy quantity is still a flat pillow.
Is a pillow without a published fill power a bad pillow?
Not necessarily — it is an unknown one. Plenty of unpublished pillows are perfectly comfortable. You simply cannot compare them to anything, which is a problem when you are spending real money.
How many pillows should a guest bed have?
Two per sleeper, in my house, with the good ones on the side people actually sleep on. There is no rule that every pillow in the room has to be the expensive one.
Are down pillows a sensible gift?
Rarely, unless you know how the person sleeps. Firmness is personal and returns are a nuisance. I keep pillows off my grandparent gift lists for that reason.
