Grandson Quotes for Cards, Birthdays and Keepsakes

The grandson quotes that work best are short and warm: “A grandson is a boy who keeps your heart young and your fridge empty,” “To my grandson: wherever you go, you take a piece of my heart with you,” and, for a birthday, “Happy birthday to the boy who made me a grandma worth bragging about.” Below are lines sorted by where they will be used, including a “to my grandson” set for the card from Grandma, birthday lines, milestone lines, funny ones and short engravings.

I spent thirty-one years teaching second grade, which means I have read a great many cards written by small boys and learned what they keep. They keep the ones that sound like the person who wrote them. Choose a line below, then add one thing only you know about him: the dinosaur he can spell, the joke he tells wrong every time.

As on my other quote pages, the lines here are traditional sayings with no reliable author, or ones I wrote myself, and I label mine. The internet hands famous names to grandson quotes freely, and almost none of them check out.

To my grandson quotes from grandma

The lines people search for most. They open a card well and are signed “Love, Grandma.”

  1. “To my grandson: wherever you go, you take a piece of my heart with you.”
  2. “To my grandson, I will always be your biggest fan, your softest landing and your loudest cheer.”
  3. “To my grandson: be brave, be kind, and call your grandmother.”
  4. “To my grandson, the world is big. You are bigger than you think.”
  5. “To my grandson: I don’t need you to be the best. I need you to be good, and happy, and home for Thanksgiving.”
  6. “To my grandson, my heart grew a size the day I met you, and it hasn’t shrunk since.”
  7. “To my grandson: when you’re tall enough to reach the top shelf, the cookie tin is still yours.”
  8. “To my grandson, you will always have a place at my table and a seat beside me.”

Short grandson quotes

For a photo caption, a gift tag, or a card that only needs one line.

  1. “A grandson is a boy who keeps your heart young and your fridge empty.”
  2. “Grandsons are the reason grandmas keep a box of bandages and a tin of cookies.”
  3. “Muddy boots, big heart, Grandma’s boy.”
  4. “My grandson: all noise, all love.”
  5. “He calls me Grandma. I call him the best thing that ever happened to this family.”
  6. “Some boys climb trees. Mine climbs straight into my heart.”
  7. “Grandsons are just superheroes in pajamas.”

Birthday quotes for a grandson

For the card with the present taped to it.

  1. “Happy birthday to the boy who made me a grandma worth bragging about.”
  2. “Another year older, another year taller than I expected. Slow down a little, would you?”
  3. “Happy birthday, buddy. You get the cake, I get the hug. Fair trade.”
  4. “Six years ago you arrived and the whole family got louder and happier. Happy birthday.”
  5. “Make your wish big. Grandma’s already came true: you.”
  6. “Happy birthday to my grandson, the best builder, best digger and best snuggler in the family.”

Milestones: first day of school, first team, first big step

  1. “First day of school. Listen to your teacher, share your snack, and tell me everything after.”
  2. “Your first game. Win or lose, you’ll always be my MVP.”
  3. “No more training wheels. The road is yours, kiddo.”
  4. “You read me a whole book tonight. I have waited a long time for that.”
  5. “Being brave isn’t about not being scared. It’s about going anyway, and you did.”
  6. “You lost your first tooth. Grandma lost her heart years ago, so we’re even.”

If you want a gift to go with the card, the best ones for little boys tend to be time rather than things. My list of hobbies to share with grandkids is where I go for ideas.

Funny grandson quotes

For the mug, the T-shirt, or the birthday card he’ll pretend not to like.

  3. “Grandma’s rules: run, jump, get messy, then come in for cookies.”
  4. “My grandson thinks I know everything. I’ve decided not to correct him.”
  5. “If it’s quiet, the grandson is up to something. If it’s loud, he’s fine.”

Short lines for engraving

  2. “Forever my grandson.”
  3. “You and me, buddy.”
  4. “Proud of you, always.”
  5. “My heart, my grandson.”

A few from Franma’s own cards

These are mine, from cards I have written. Use them freely.

  1. “You build the tallest towers and knock them down with the most joy. Never lose either skill.”
  2. “Thank you for teaching me the names of every truck on the highway. I’m still learning.”
  3. “You held the door for me at the library and didn’t wait for a thank you. That’s the whole thing, sweetheart.”
  4. “My favorite sound is you running up my front steps.”

One line with a real source

For a line with an actual verifiable origin, Proverbs 17:6 in the King James Version opens: “Children’s children are the crown of old men.” It is about grandchildren in general, and plenty of grandmothers borrow it anyway.

How to choose

Pick the line that sounds like you’d say it out loud. If he is small, choose short and silly, because he will be the one reading it. If he is older, choose one of the “to my grandson” lines, which hold up for years. Either way, add one sentence about him.

For a brand-new grandson, use my first grandchild quotes, which has a section of first grandson lines written for the newborn stage. Granddaughters have their own set too: granddaughter quotes.
