When Is Grandparents Day 2026? Date & Easy Ideas

National Grandparents Day 2026 falls on Sunday, September 13. In the United States the holiday always lands on the first Sunday after Labor Day, so the date shifts a little every year — and in 2026 that puts it on the thirteenth. Canada’s Grandparents Day, the second Sunday in September, happens to land on the same day this year. The UK celebrates separately, on the first Sunday of October, which in 2026 is October 4. Now that the calendar question is settled, here’s what to actually do with the day.

Why the date moves every year

Grandparents Day isn’t pinned to a number the way the Fourth of July is. The 1978 resolution asked the president to proclaim “the first Sunday of September after Labor Day” each year, and because Labor Day itself floats — first Monday in September — the whole thing slides around the calendar. Labor Day 2026 is Monday, September 7, so Grandparents Day is the Sunday that follows: September 13.

That’s why you cannot simply remember the date. I have been a grandmother for seven years and I still look it up annually, so please do not feel behind.

Write next year’s in the family calendar the same week you celebrate this one. That is the entire trick, and I offer it free of charge.

Who invented Grandparents Day, anyway

A West Virginia woman named Marian McQuade, who started campaigning in 1970 and did not stop. Her goal was less about presents than about getting young people to sit with older people and listen — she hoped children would “adopt” a grandparent for life. West Virginia proclaimed a state Grandparents Day in 1973; Congress passed a joint resolution, and President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation on August 3, 1978.

I mention the history because it tells you what the day is for. It was never designed as a gift-buying occasion. It was designed to put a child and an old person in a room together with nothing to do but talk. Every good idea below is a variation on that.

Easy ideas for Grandparents Day 2026

If you have ten minutes and no plan, pick one of these:

  • The interview. Sit the grandchild down and record their answers to questions about Grandma or Grandpa. How old are they? What’s their job? What do they love most? The answers are hilarious at four and precious at forty. Then flip it and let the grandparent answer questions about their own childhood.
  • A portrait, unassisted. Hand the child paper and let them draw the grandparent with no adult corrections. Frame the result exactly as drawn. Mine gave me purple hair and eleven fingers and it hangs in the hall.
  • Breakfast the kids “make.” Pancakes with grandkid involvement, which is to say flour everywhere and a grandmother who does not care.
  • A three-generation photo, same spot every year. Year one it’s sweet. Year ten it’s the most valuable object in the house.
  • Plant something. Mid-September is fall planting season in much of the country. Bulbs go in, and next spring there’s proof.
  • A scheduled video call with an actual plan for the long-distance families — the grandparent reads a picture book to the camera, or both houses bake the same cookies that weekend and compare.

My longer list, sorted by whether everyone’s in the same room, lives in Grandparents Day ideas the whole family will love.

If the grandkids want to make something

Little hands need projects sized for little hands, and September is warm enough that most of the good ones can happen at the picnic table where the mess belongs. Handprint art, salt-dough keepsakes, painted pots with something living in them — I’ve laid out the ones that survive a three-year-old in Grandparents Day crafts little hands can make.

If you’re buying something

Buy late-August at the latest if it needs to ship or be personalized, because everyone else remembers this holiday around September 10 and the engraving shops know it. What grandparents actually want, in my experience and that of every grandmother I’ve interrogated on the subject, is evidence of the grandchild — photos, voices, handwriting. The gift guide that follows that principle is Grandparents Day gifts worth more than a card.

A note for schools and daycares

If you’re a teacher planning a Grandparents Day event — I did thirty-one years of them — schedule it for the Friday before, not the Sunday itself. Families travel on the weekend. And please, please have a plan for the children whose grandparents have died or live overseas: a “special grown-up” invitation covers everyone without singling anyone out. I learned that one the hard way in 1993 and have never forgotten the child’s face.

Make it small enough to repeat

The single best thing you can do with September 13, 2026, is choose something so easy you’ll still be doing it in 2036. One repeated ritual beats ten elaborate one-offs. Pancakes. The interview. The photo on the same porch step. Children build their sense of family out of the things that reliably recur, and grandparents build their whole year around them.

FAQ: Grandparents Day 2026

When is Grandparents Day 2026?

Sunday, September 13, 2026, in the United States. The date is set as the first Sunday after Labor Day, and Labor Day 2026 falls on Monday, September 7.

Is Grandparents Day always in September?

In the US and Canada, yes — it lands in early-to-mid September every year. The UK holds its Grandparents’ Day on the first Sunday of October instead, which is October 4 in 2026, and other countries celebrate on dates of their own.

Is Grandparents Day a federal holiday?

No. It’s a proclaimed observance, not a public holiday. Banks, schools and offices operate normally — which is part of why families so often mark it on the weekend around it rather than the day itself.

What do you do on Grandparents Day?

Something small and repeatable: a shared breakfast, a kid-made craft, a recorded interview, a three-generation photo, or a planned video call with a read-aloud for long-distance families. Time and the grandchild’s own handiwork outrank anything store-bought.

When is Grandparents Day 2027?

Sunday, September 12, 2027. Labor Day that year is Monday, September 6, and the holiday follows the Sunday after.
